Band Shell 75th Anniversary

BAND SHELL 75TH ANNIVERSARY

The Sioux City Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to announce that the band shell in Grandview Park is 75 years old. The facility was dedicated on May 26, 1935 as part of the Civil Works Administration (CWA). At the dedication one dignitary was quoted as saying, “Out of the chaos of the world wide depression Sioux City emerges with a temple of music and beauty which will be an inspiration as long as the Grandview Music Pavilion stands”. The band shell is a focal point of Grandview Park where several programs take place such as: Saturday in the Park, the municipal band concerts and Movies in the Park.

The facility recently underwent some restoration work with repair of the structure, painting, plaza improvements and activation of the original fountain. The band shell is 102 feet wide, 51 feet high and cost around $51,000 to build in 1935.

The Monahan Post Band played regularly at the band shell under the direction of Leo Kucinski. In 1930 the band began a fund raising campaign for the project which led to the successful construction of the band shell.

The Sioux City Municipal Band will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the band shell on August 1 with special recognition and songs. The concert will begin at 7:30 PM.
