Sioux City to Welcome MAAD Softball Tournament this Weekend at Hy Vee Fields The City of Sioux City is proud to welcome the Midwest Athletic Association of the Deaf (MAAD) Slow-Pitch Softball Tournament this Friday and Saturday, July 23-24 at the Hy Vee Fields at Chautauqua Park. The tournament is being coordinated by the Omaha Association of the Deaf (OAD) in conjunction with the Sioux City Sports Authority. 2010 marks the first time since 1979 that the MAAD Softball Tournament returns to Sioux City. This year’s event features 14 total teams playing in men’s, women’s, and co-ed divisions. This will be the John L. Buckmaster Memorial 52nd annual men’s tournament, 29th women’s tourney, and 12th co-ed event. Games will begin at 1:00 PM on Friday and 8:00 AM on Saturday. Friday’s play will open with a homerun derby at 11AM prior to the 1PM round-robin schedule. Saturday’s games will be played in a standard double-elimination tournament format. “We are excited to bring this event back to Sioux City for the first time in over 30 years,” said Corey Westra, President of the Sioux City Sports Authority. “MAAD is passionate about their event and have been great to work with from day one.” “They use many local venders to benefit the community they are in,” commented Westra. “For example all of their trophies and t-shirts are being produced and made right here in the Sioux City area, so our local economy benefits from the event.” “It will be a very exciting weekend for them with RAGBRAI going on and they are looking forward to the atmosphere in the City to complement their longstanding tournament,” added Westra. The Holiday Inn Downtown is the host hotel and funding from Missouri River Historical Development (MRHD) was used to secure this event in Sioux City.
