City Looking to Move Forward on Southbridge Interchange Location Study
With the recent creation of the Southbridge Economic Development Council and a sub committee to look specifically at the opportunity for an Interchange in the area, the City is looking to move forward on a location study for an interchange in the area. The City of Sioux City and Woodbury County have continued to work with the IDOT to investigate the opportunities for an alternate interchange location for the replacement of the Port Neal Interchange.
Previous considerations for an interchange were governed by the constraint of distance between the Port Neal and Sgt Bluff interchanges. If the Port Neal Interchange is removed, there is more flexibility for a location between Salix and Sgt Bluff.
The City of Sioux City is interested commissioning a location study to evaluate the best location between the Salix and Sgt Bluff interchanges that will best serve the existing and future industries, provide for the best location to tie into existing and potential street networks to serve the area, provide operational convenience of allowing the existing interchange to remain open while the new interchange is being constructed, avoid relocation of critical utility infrastructure and fixed point obstacles (Airport beacon) and environmental deterrents. The desire is for a safe, efficient interchange design that betters the Interstate System.
The City has applied for and has been allocated Metropolitan Planning Organization Surface Transportation Program funds for the original 235th Street location along I-29. The City is interested in using some of the design funds to investigate alternate locations. With the support of the County and the MPO, the City would amend its current contract with Howard R. Green Company (that did the Interchange Justification Report for the previously proposed “235th” interchange) to develop the location study and come up with a recommendation that can be evaluated by all parties.
