City Crews Patching Potholes
CITY CREWS PATCHING POTHOLES
Field Services crews are aggressively patching potholes. Pothole patching will remain a priority until the majority of the repairs are complete as weather permits. Field Services crews produce hot-mix asphalt at Field Services Headquarters, 1723 18th Street.
Potholes are created when moisture penetrates the pavement and the freeze/thaw cycle forces the pavement to break apart. Each year Field Services crews patch approximately 25,000 potholes. Since January 1 in addition to the snow clearing efforts, crews have patched over 4,000 potholes and placed 140 tons of Hot Mix Ashpalt. Three crews are working during the day with one overnight crew as weather permits. A crew places an average of 5-10 tons per shift patching potholes and repairing service cuts. Due to the melting snow, some potholes may be filled with water/ice and may not be in a condition conducive to patching. Staff has created a list and will return to these locations once these areas have dried up.
Citizens are asked to drive safely and be aware of Field Services crews. If motorists give the crews space to work, the potholes can be patched quicker, with greater safety to both the crews and motorists.
Field Services staff has developed a list of potholes that need to be patched. If residents would like to report a pothole, they can do so by filling out a form online at www.sioux-city.org or by calling Field Services at 279-6886. A pothole patching prioritization map is being utilized similar to the Snow and Ice Control priority map. Priority I and II streets and the downtown area will be repaired first, followed by residential areas and alleys.
