Art Center Showcases New Children’s Gallery Attractions
The Sioux City Art Center and the Junior League of Sioux City announce the completion of three new projects in the Junior League’s Hands On! Gallery at the Sioux City Art Center. Continuing a partnership that began over 70 years ago, the Sioux City Art Center and Junior League of Sioux City have worked together on the renovation of the children’s gallery.
These projects were funded with $21,000 donated from the Junior League and its members individually in memory of Linda Hartje, a past president of the League.
The new projects include: - Oodles of Doodles, an interactive station featuring a commercial quality 5 x 10-foot white board and an assortment of colored markers that children and adults can use to express themselves. - Gallery of Creativity, a mural that includes a children’s art exhibition space featuring changing displays of artwork produced by children participating in the Art Center’s art classes. - Above and Beyond, a site specific artwork commissioned for the ceiling area of the Hands On! Gallery by Sioux City artist Nan Wilson.
Wilson’s artwork titled Above and Beyond was commissioned with the idea of adding to the visual excitement of the Hands On! Gallery. Karen Clark, a sustaining member of the Junior League, first suggested the idea of commissioning an artist to create something for the ceiling. Knowing that Wilson, an art professor at Briar Cliff University, was working with translucent materials the Art Center’s Director Al Harris-Fernandez invited her to visit the site and make a proposal. Clark noted, “When Al and I saw what she had in mind we both agreed that it would be a perfect fit for the space.”
Wilson’s artwork, featuring translucent material draped and weaved through the ceiling’s track lighting system, occupies an 18 x 12-foot area. Harris-Fernandez noted, “The undulating rhythm of its form and colors, dark blue, emerald green and gold, call to mind both the sky and the sea, and is a positive addition to the popular and well used space.”
The Children’s Art Gallery exhibition includes work by 22 children working in a variety of mediums ranging from acrylic on canvas board, to collage, to India ink and oil pastel resist. The young artists include: Taylor Barrett, Sean Coyle, Sarah Glaser, Braedon Hunt, Logan Hunt, Bear Jensen, Ross Leopold, Baily O’Connor, Allie Pinchuk, Lauren Pinchuk, Lilly Sencenbaugh, Kristin Tennabel, and Cameron Wahlberg.
